Landlords given cannabis warning

AN ALTRINCHAM lettings agent has warned landlords to be on guard against their properties being used as cannabis farms.

William Jordan, managing director of Jordan’s Residential Lettings, said: “The damage caused by cannabis farms normally runs into thousands of pounds and many insurance policies are rendered invalid due to the criminal nature of the activity.

“Crude venting and unsafe water and heating systems, which pose fire and electrocution risks, are the most likely causes of damage and landlords should be aware of tell-tale signs such as changes to the walls and floors, suggesting their property could be being used to grow drugs,” he said.

The National Landlords Association has suggestions to beat criminal gangs such as taking detailed references and credit checks, not taking rent in advance, checking the property regularly and getting to know the neighbours.
